Palm Beach (also called the Island of Palm Beach for the differentiation of the county of the same name) is an incorporated town located in the Palm Beach County in Florida in the United States.
The name was founded as a resort by Henry Morrison Flagler, the founder of Standard Oil, which made available to the public islands on the east coast of Florida through its railway Florida East Coast Railway.
Initially, the area consisted of two luxury hotels owned by Flagler. It was the Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Hotel Breakers. The neighboring city of West Palm Beach was built on his side as a city service and became a great city independently. Many homes for sale in Flagler were purchased by wealthy people and in 1902 Flagler himself built a mansion in the architectural style of Beaux-Arts. He also built a museum, created by New York Carrere and Hastings. The museum should help bring more leisure during the winter. The town was incorporated April 17, 1911.
The city is served by the International Airport and the Amtrak railway companies and Tri-Rail originally from West Palm Beach to Miami. The public road transport was provided by Palm Tran until May 10, 2008. The city is connected to the mainland by bridges American Royal Park Bridge and Flagler Memorial Bridge.
The car is the dominant means of transportation on the island. Cycling is also popular but the island is poorly equipped in cycling. A path for pedestrians and cyclists, however, connects the south to the north of the island along the Lake Worth Lagoon.
